I wiped the sleep out of my eyes and followed
the warm and gentle light coming from the kitchen.
As always, granny had sprung out of bed
long before the sun had even considered rising.
As we were stretching our backs, the cat and me,
a wonderful smell caught our noses
like a fishing hook.
A cup of melted butter, a pot of rice pudding,
a rye dough and, of course, a bowl of egg and butter
spread were waiting for us on the table, delicious as ever. The heat from the brick oven had created
glistening drops on granny’s forehead.
She wiped her brow with her apron
and turned to me, smiling:
“Such a wonderful way to fill the little ones’ tummies, than breakfast of freshly baked rye pies.”
